Individual Note: 1850 and 1860 census records show his name entry as what looks to be Jepu and not Jesse? Never heard of Jepu and assume Jesse is correct but wanted to make this note.

Individual Note: Mary Anna May was born 1822. July 3, 1838, when she was only 16 she married John P. Richardson who was 19 years old. By June 2, 1839 she had a baby girl, Elizabeth Jane. 1841 William J. was born, then in 1843 Lucinda Catherine. Margaret Ann was born in 1846, then twins James and John F. in 1848. George H. was born in 1850 and Mary F. in 1853. Mary Anna died in 1853 ( I am guessing from childbirth complications). She was only 31 and had borne 8 children. James may have died at birth, he was not on the 1860 census.

Mary Hardin Burkitt Richardson letter to her brother,
General Henry L. Burkitt of Waynesboro, Tennessee: --
Hampton, Texas - Nov. 3, 1859
Dear Brother:
On the 4th of September last the Indians came in among us
and after doing sme other mischief, they paid me a visit. My
husband was from home on business and I was alone with my
five little chidren, two miles away from any other house. I
had sent my two oldest (Mary and John) to drive up the cows
and did not suspect that the Indians were lurking near.
They espied the children about three hundred yards from the
house and chased them toward home where they fled for
protection; and little was the protection that I alone a
timid woman was able to give against eight savages,
thirsting for blood and plunder.
Mary, the oldest made good her retreat; but oh imagine my
feelings when I saw them overhaul little John and begin to
stab him with a lance. I was much frightened and expected
nothing but to be massacred together with my children.
I thought of my gun at that critical moment. I took it down
and fired and kept firing until assistance came to my
relief. The Indians (as I suppose) thought there were men
in the house prepared to receive them and fled and left my
child alive, but severely stabbed in the back, through the
arm and in the right side. He has recovered from his
wounds.
Your sister,
Mary H. Richardson
